The author of Sun, Sand and Somals, Major H. Rayne wrote an article in Blackwood’s Magazine in 1938 about some trips he made from Zeila to the ruins of Old Amud near Borama. He records the conversations he had with his colleague Haji Musa Farah as well as the locals and an old man they met on the road about the history of the ruins. They inform him that it is believed these old towns were built by the ‘old people’—the now extinct Harla. He is told a story about the well known Queen Araweelo who, according to them, was the queen of the Harla.
